A calcium magnesium carbonate (CaMg(CO3)2), dolomite lends its name to the rock dolostone that it composes. It crystallizes in the trigonal system, and its rhombohedral crystals often develop curved, saddle-shaped faces that are diagnostic. The mineral is transparent to translucent with a vitreous luster, a white streak, and perfect rhombohedral cleavage; colors include colorless, white, pink, gray, and brown. Its Mohs hardness ranges from 3.5 to 4 and its specific gravity from 2.84 to 2.86. Dolomite is distinguished from calcite by its markedly weaker reaction with cold dilute hydrochloric acid. Its rhombohedral crystals with curved faces, together with a subconchoidal fracture, help distinguish hand specimens.
