One of the most common minerals on Earth, calcite is the most stable polymorph of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and the defining constituent of limestone and marble. It crystallizes in the trigonal system in an exceptional variety of habits, whether rhombohedral, scalenohedral, or prismatic, and its perfect rhombohedral cleavage is diagnostic. The mineral is transparent to translucent with a vitreous luster, a white streak, and a Mohs hardness of 3, its reference position on the scale. Calcite builds many cave formations, including stalactites and stalagmites, and its clear crystals show strong double refraction. Colors range from colorless through white, yellow, orange, blue, and green.
Calcite is the most stable polymorph of calcium carbonate and is one of the most common minerals on Earth. It is the primary mineral in limestone and marble, and forms spectacular cave formations including stalactites and stalagmites.
