Sodalite is a royal-blue tectosilicate (Na4Al3Si3O12Cl) named for its sodium content and widely worked as an ornamental gemstone. It crystallizes in the cubic system, usually massive and only rarely as dodecahedral crystals, showing a vitreous luster, a white streak, poor {110} cleavage, and a conchoidal fracture. Colors include rich royal blue, violet-blue, gray, and white, with a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6 and a specific gravity from 2.14 to 2.40. Unlike the similarly colored lapis lazuli, sodalite rarely contains pyrite and shows a more even, uniform blue. A Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6 and a conchoidal fracture accompany the deep blue that makes the mineral desirable for carving.
