Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate (MnCO3) prized for its rose-red to pink color. It crystallizes in the trigonal system, forming rhombohedral crystals as well as massive, banded, and stalactitic aggregates, with a vitreous luster, a white streak, and perfect rhombohedral cleavage. Its Mohs hardness is 3.5 to 4 and its specific gravity 3.45 to 3.70. Banded rhodochrosite from Argentina is especially well known and serves as that country's national mineral, while superb crystallized specimens come from the Sweet Home Mine in Colorado. Its perfect rhombohedral cleavage and translucent vitreous crystals aid identification, and a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4 places it among the softer carbonates.
