A vivid green copper carbonate (Cu2(CO3)(OH)2), malachite has been used as a pigment and gemstone for thousands of years. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system, most commonly as botryoidal, stalactitic, or banded massive aggregates whose concentric green bands make it a favorite for decorative objects. The mineral is translucent with a vitreous luster, a light-green streak, and perfect {201} cleavage; its Mohs hardness is 3.5 to 4 and its specific gravity 3.60 to 4.00. Malachite forms in the oxidized zones of copper deposits, frequently alongside azurite. A light-green streak and perfect cleavage help confirm the mineral where weathering has dulled its surface.

Malachite is a vivid green copper carbonate mineral that has been used as a pigment and gemstone for thousands of years. Its distinctive banded pattern makes it popular in decorative objects. It commonly forms with azurite in copper deposits.
