A calcium magnesium carbonate (CaMg(CO3)2), dolomite lends its name to the rock dolostone that it composes. It crystallizes in the trigonal system, and its rhombohedral crystals often develop curved, saddle-shaped faces that are diagnostic. The mineral is transparent to translucent with a vitreous luster, a white streak, and perfect rhombohedral cleavage; colors include colorless, white, pink, gray, and brown. Its Mohs hardness ranges from 3.5 to 4 and its specific gravity from 2.84 to 2.86. Dolomite is distinguished from calcite by its markedly weaker reaction with cold dilute hydrochloric acid.
