The most strongly magnetic mineral found in nature, magnetite is an iron oxide (Fe3O4) and an important ore of iron. It crystallizes in the cubic system as octahedral, dodecahedral, or massive forms and is opaque with a metallic luster, a black color, a black streak, and no cleavage. Its Mohs hardness ranges from 5.5 to 6.5 and its specific gravity from 5.17 to 5.18. Naturally magnetized specimens, called lodestone, served as an early form of compass, and magnetite's magnetism remains its most distinctive diagnostic property. Its octahedral crystals, black streak, and absence of cleavage complete a straightforward identification. It is a major constituent of banded iron formations, which supply much of the world's iron ore.
Magnetite is one of the most magnetic of all naturally occurring minerals and is the most magnetic mineral commonly found on Earth. It is an important ore of iron and was used as an early form of compass (lodestone).
