Prized since antiquity for its intense azure color, azurite is a monoclinic copper carbonate (Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2) that served for centuries as a blue pigment. It occurs in the oxidized zones of copper ore bodies, frequently alongside malachite, into which it may alter pseudomorphically over time. The mineral is transparent with a vitreous luster, a light-blue streak, and perfect {011} cleavage, building prismatic, tabular, or massive aggregates. Hardness falls between 3.5 and 4, and specific gravity between 3.77 and 3.89. Deep-blue crystals from Morocco and Namibia rank among the specimens most sought by collectors, and the mineral's darker tone distinguishes it from paler blue copper species.
Azurite is an intense blue copper carbonate mineral, historically important as a blue pigment. It commonly occurs with malachite and may pseudomorphously replace to malachite. Fine azurite crystals from Morocco and Namibia are highly sought by collectors.
