Native osmium is a hexagonal mineral forming silvery to tin-white metallic grains, typically as an alloy with iridium (osmiridium or iridosmine), in platinum-group element placers derived from ultramafic and ophiolitic rocks. It has a Mohs hardness of 7 and is the densest naturally occurring element. Major occurrences include the Ural Mountains in Russia and ophiolitic complexes globally; osmium is used in fountain pen tips族, electrical contacts, and as a catalyst in chemical synthesis.
