Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar renowned for labradorescence, a spectacular play of iridescent color. As light enters the stone it reflects from internal lamellar structures, producing flashes of blue, gold, green, and copper against a gray to dark-gray body. The mineral has the composition (Ca,Na)(Al,Si)4O8, crystallizes in the triclinic system, and shows a vitreous luster, a white streak, and perfect {001} cleavage in massive or tabular habits. Its Mohs hardness is 6 to 6.5 and its specific gravity 2.68 to 2.72. It was first identified on the Isle of Paul in Labrador, Canada, from which it takes its name. Gem-quality material with strong labradorescence is cut for jewelry and ornamental use.
