Native vanadium is an extremely rare cubic mineral reported from strongly reducing geological environments such as vanadium-enriched metamorphic rocks and unusual inclusion phases in minerals from mantle-derived rocks. It has a silvery gray metallic appearance and Mohs hardness of approximately 7. Native vanadium is of purely scientific curiosity; vanadium metal is industrially significant as a steel alloying agent and in vanadium redox flow batteries for energy storage.
