Native tin is a tetragonal mineral occurring as silvery metallic masses or grains in tin-bearing granitic pegmatites, cassiterite-bearing hydrothermal veins, and in some alluvial placer deposits. It has a Mohs hardness of approximately 1.5 and a distinctive bright metallic luster, and emits the 'tin cry' sound upon bending. While native tin is mineralogically rare, cassiterite (tin oxide) is the main commercial ore, and tin metal is widely used in solder, tinplate, and bronze alloys.
