Silver, a native precious metal (Ag), is the best electrical conductor of all metals and has been used for coinage and jewelry for millennia. It occurs in hydrothermal veins, often associated with calcite, quartz, and various sulfide minerals, and crystallizes in the cubic system as wire, dendritic, massive, or cubic forms. The metal has a silver-white color that tarnishes to gray or black, a metallic luster, a silver-white streak, no cleavage, and a hackly fracture. Its Mohs hardness is 2.5 to 3 and its specific gravity 10.10 to 10.50. Its softness and malleability, with a hardness of only 2.5 to 3, reflect the ductile nature shared by the native metals.
