Unusually dense for a non-metallic mineral, barite is a barium sulfate (BaSO4) that ranks as the heaviest of the common light-colored minerals, with a specific gravity between 4.30 and 4.60. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, forming tabular, prismatic, or massive habits, and displays a vitreous luster, a white streak, and perfect {001} cleavage. Colors span colorless, white, blue, yellow, and brown, and the hardness is a modest 3 to 3.5. Barite is the reference mineral for barium and finds its primary industrial use as a weighting agent in the drilling muds employed during oil and gas exploration. Its two good cleavage directions and considerable heft in the hand are practical clues to identification.
