Native nickel is a cubic mineral occurring as silvery metallic grains and masses in serpentinized ultramafic rocks (ophiolites), reduced metamorphic environments, and as a significant component of iron meteorites where it forms the mineral awaruite or as awaruite-like alloys. It has a Mohs hardness of approximately 4 and a bright metallic luster. Nickel is industrially one of the most important metals, used in stainless steel, superalloys, electroplating, and battery technology.
