Native iridium is a cubic mineral occurring as silver-white to gray metallic grains in platinum-group element (PGE) placers, ophiolitic chromitites, and related ultramafic rocks. It has a Mohs hardness of 6.5 and is one of the densest and most corrosion-resistant naturally occurring minerals. Major sources include the Bushveld Complex in South Africa and the Ural Mountains in Russia; iridium is used in high-performance spark plugs, crucibles, and scientific instruments.
