Native chromium is an extremely rare mineral occurring as tiny metallic grains within ultramafic rocks and chromitite pods under strongly reducing conditions, as well as in some meteorites. It has a cubic crystal system with a silvery bright metallic appearance and Mohs hardness of about 8.5. Native chromium is of great scientific curiosity as its high hardness distinguishes it among native metals, while chromium metal is industrially critical for stainless steel production and hard chrome plating.
