Native cadmium is an exceptionally rare mineral occurring as tiny metallic grains or inclusions within zinc-bearing sulfide ore deposits, reflecting cadmium's geochemical affinity for sphalerite. It has a hexagonal crystal system and a silvery metallic luster with Mohs hardness of about 2. Cadmium is primarily of scientific curiosity as a native element mineral, while the refined metal is commercially important in rechargeable batteries, pigments, and electroplating.
