Native mercury is a unique liquid metal mineral at room temperature, the only elemental mineral that is fluid under standard conditions, crystallizing as rhombohedral crystals only below -38.8°C. It occurs in cinnabar ore zones as bright silvery liquid droplets coating host rock surfaces, primarily in low-temperature hydrothermal deposits, with famous occurrences at Almadén, Spain, and Idrija, Slovenia. Liquid mercury is highly toxic and its use has been largely restricted due to environmental concerns, though it remains important in scientific instruments and chlor-alkali production.
