Native platinum is a cubic mineral occurring as silver-white metallic grains, flakes, grupo and occasional nuggets in platinum-group element placers derived from ultramafic rocks, as well as in situ within dunites and chromitites of layered intrusions. It has a Mohs hardness of 4–4.5 and is one of the rarest and most valuable naturally occurring metals. The Bushveld Complex in South Africa, the Ural Mountains in Russia, and the Merensky Reef are among the world's premier platinum localities; it is used in catalytic converters, jewelry, laboratory equipment, and hydrogen fuel cells.
